Wanderstop is a game about burnout, yes. But it’s also a game about identity, about the way our own minds work against us, about the fear of stopping and what it means when everything you’ve built yourself upon—your work, your achievements, your doing—is taken away.

The only things that remain are Boro, the books, and the images we’ve taken. I hated this, in fact, I think I still hate it. It felt like the game was forcing me to deal with my own control issues, to accept that I couldn’t hold onto everything.

Customers will ask for specific brews, while Boro and Alta (and the Pluffins) can drink just about anything. With each sip of tea, we get to know our characters a little better as they share vignettes of their life outside the shop.

If you've ever worked yourself to the point of exhaustion, blamed yourself for just "not trying hard enough" when you know full well your resources are depleted, or felt like a failure for not being the best in the world at something – you might need to put some time aside for Wanderstop.

Her savior is Boro, a kindly, somewhat spherical man with a tenuous grasp of the English language, who sits patiently with her as she comes to terms with her less-intense surroundings. What is initially an offer to make tea for Alta becomes an offer for a job at his cafe.

As Alta, a former warrior now reluctantly running a teashop in the forest, you'll juggle fulfilling orders while grappling with existential uncertainty. Alongside your companion, Boro, you’ll settle into this slower-paced life—whether you like it or not.

In some ways, Wanderstop reminds me of the tear-jerking Spiritfarer, as it’s very much a story-first game. When new visitors wander into the tea Wanderstop Gameplay shop’s forest clearing, you first need to get to know them before they’ll give you a tea request, and then you must use the information you’ve gathered to brew the correct cup for them.

As you tidy the leaves and weeds, you do have a small chance of finding something hidden underneath the clutter. Dozens of little trinkets can be uncovered while you clean, including colorful new tea mugs, teddy bears, and even lost packages. The catch, however, is that you can’t keep these trinkets as the roughly 15-hour campaign progresses, and the story directly addresses why in a clever way.

The game doesn’t let Alta drown, pelo, Wanderstop sends Alta a buoy in the form of Boro. I think a lot of us, who have been undiagnosed for a long time, are just now realizing how much we have to unpack.

This colossal lifestyle change usually takes place within a simple opening cutscene, a quick dusting of lore before we get to the real meat of the game: growing turnips.

Players are invited to immerse themselves in its cafe management simulator where they must learn how to brew a good cup of tea using a mix of different ingredients, serve it to customers, and perform related chores such as cleaning, decorating, and gardening.

You can feel it in the pacing, in the way the game quietly, deliberately slows you down. I should have expected this from Ivy Road, the creators of The Stanley Parable, but I was still surprised by just how masterfully the game navigates these themes.
